How to cancel BetterHelp

This one cancels from your account page in a couple of minutes, with nobody to talk to.

The catch

There are two separate actions in the account and only one of them stops the money. Ending the relationship with your therapist, which the interface frames as quitting therapy, does not cancel the membership, and people who have said goodbye to their counsellor reasonably assume the subscription went with them. It did not. The membership has to be cancelled in payment settings as its own step.

  1. Log in to your BetterHelp account
  2. Open Menu, then My Account, then Payment settings
  3. Select Cancel Membership or Quit therapy and confirm
  4. Optionally request data erasure under Personal Information

After you cancel BetterHelp

You keep access to the account and to any sessions already paid for until the end of the current billing period, so a week that has been paid for is still a week you can use.

Message history with your therapist stays in the account after cancellation unless you ask for it to be removed. That is worth a decision rather than a default: erasure of your personal information is a separate request, and it is permanent, but leaving the history in place means a sensitive record persists on an account you are no longer using.

Returning later does not guarantee the same therapist. Availability is reassigned, so if the intention is a pause rather than an exit, raising that with your therapist first is more likely to preserve the match than cancelling and coming back.

Worth knowing

BetterHelp is cancelled from account settings inside your logged in account, not by a direct URL. Purchases made inside the iOS app are Apple billed via StoreKit and must be cancelled in Apple Account subscriptions.

Questions people ask about cancelling BetterHelp

I stopped seeing my therapist. Why am I still being charged?
Because ending therapy and cancelling the membership are two different actions. Quitting therapy releases the therapist. The subscription continues until it is cancelled separately in payment settings.
What happens to my messages after I cancel?
They remain in the account unless you request erasure of your personal information, which is a separate option and is irreversible. Decide deliberately rather than leaving it, since the record is a sensitive one to leave sitting on a dormant account.
Will I get the same therapist if I come back?
Not necessarily. Therapists are matched on availability, and yours may have a full caseload by the time you return. If you want to keep the match, discuss a pause with them rather than cancelling outright.
Do I lose the sessions I have already paid for?
No. Access runs to the end of the billing period you have paid for, so sessions within it are still yours to use.
