How to cancel Spotify

This one cancels from your account page in a couple of minutes, with nobody to talk to.

The catch

Spotify has more billing routes than almost anything else on this list, and each one hides the cancel button somewhere different. Bought through a mobile carrier or a broadband provider, which is common in Europe, and the charge is on your phone bill rather than your card, so Spotify cannot cancel it. Bought inside the iPhone app and Apple bills it. On a Duo or Family plan you can only cancel if you are the plan owner. Everyone else can only leave the plan.

After you cancel Spotify

Premium keeps running until the end of the period you already paid for, then the account drops to Spotify Free rather than closing. That distinction matters more here than on any other service on this list. Your playlists, your saved albums, your followers and your listening history all survive, because the account survives. You are not deleting anything, you are removing the paid layer from it.

What you lose the moment Premium ends is offline listening. Every download disappears, on every device, and there is no grace period. Shuffle restrictions and ads come back on mobile. If you have built playlists for a commute with no signal, that is the thing to plan around.

Spotify does not refund the unused part of a month, so the useful move is to cancel a day or two before renewal and keep Premium until it lapses on its own. If you later change your mind, resubscribing to the same account restores Premium instantly, downloads included, with nothing to rebuild.

Worth knowing

Premium stays active until the next billing date, then the account switches to Spotify Free. If Spotify was subscribed through a third party (mobile/broadband carrier), cancel with that company instead. If purchased inside the iOS app it may be Apple-billed and must be canceled via Apple Settings / StoreKit manage subscriptions.

Questions people ask about cancelling Spotify

Do I lose my playlists when I cancel Spotify Premium?

No. Cancelling Premium downgrades the account to Spotify Free, it does not close it. Playlists, saved albums, podcasts and followers all stay exactly where they are. Only the paid features go, which means downloads, ad free listening and the mobile restrictions coming back.

Why can I not cancel Spotify in the app?

Because the cancellation lives on the web account page, not in the app, and if a carrier or Apple is billing you it is not on Spotify's site either. Check the plan page. It names whoever charges you, and that is who has to cancel it.

What happens to my downloads?

They stop working the moment Premium ends, on every device, with no grace period. Downloaded tracks are licensed rather than owned, so there is nothing left on the phone to play. Anything you want offline afterwards has to come from somewhere else.

Is a Duo or Family plan cheaper than cancelling?

Often, yes. Splitting Duo with one other person costs each of you roughly half of an individual plan, and every account stays separate with its own library and recommendations. If you qualify for it, the student rate is the bigger saving.
