How to cancel T-Mobile

There is no online route. You have to ring them, and they will not make it quick.

The catch

  • Retention call

There is no online route. You have to ring them, and they will not make it quick. You will be handed to someone whose job is to keep you. Expect an offer, then a better offer, before anyone cancels anything.

Cancel T-Mobile step by step

  1. Call T-Mobile at 1-800-937-8997, or dial 611 from a T-Mobile phone
  2. Ask to cancel your service or a specific line
  3. Verify the account holder details when prompted
  4. Save any voicemail greetings and messages first, since they are deleted
  5. Note charges run through the end of the current billing cycle

After you cancel T-Mobile

If you want to keep your phone number, do not cancel first. Port the number to the new carrier and let that port close the T-Mobile line automatically. Cancelling first releases the number, and once it is gone it is gone: there is no reliable way to get a released number back. This single ordering mistake is the most costly thing on this page and it is entirely avoidable.

Device payments do not disappear with the line. Any remaining installment balance stays owed, and where other lines remain active on the account it simply keeps billing against them. Promotional bill credits tied to a device typically stop the moment the line ends, which can turn a phone you thought was nearly paid off into a balance due.

Save your voicemail greetings and any saved messages before you call, because they are deleted with the line and cannot be recovered afterwards. Your final bill covers the full billing cycle rather than stopping on the cancellation date.

Worth knowing

Cancelling requires calling 1-800-937-8997 or dialing 611 from a T-Mobile phone; there is no self service cancel button. Device payments on a cancelled line keep billing if other lines stay active.

Questions people ask about cancelling T-Mobile

How do I keep my phone number when leaving T-Mobile?
Port it to the new carrier first and let the port close the line for you. Do not cancel and then try to move the number. Cancelling releases it, and a released number is effectively unrecoverable.
Can I cancel T-Mobile online?
No. There is no self service cancel button. You have to call 1-800-937-8997, or dial 611 from a T-Mobile phone, and verify the account holder details. Expect to be offered a reason to stay before anything is cancelled.
What happens to my device payments?
The remaining installment balance stays owed and keeps billing if other lines are still active on the account. Promotional bill credits attached to the device usually stop when the line ends, which can leave a larger balance than you expected.
Is my final T-Mobile bill prorated?
No. Charges run through the end of the current billing cycle regardless of when in that cycle you cancel, so there is nothing gained by cancelling early in a month. Time it near the end of a cycle instead.
