How to cancel Verizon Wireless

This one cancels from your account page in a couple of minutes, with nobody to talk to.

The catch

Order matters more here than on any other subscription. If you want to keep your phone number, you have to port it to the new carrier first and let that port close the Verizon line for you. Cancelling the line yourself releases the number, and a released number cannot reliably be recovered. People who cancel first and shop for a carrier second lose the number they have had for a decade.

Cancel Verizon Wireless step by step

  1. Sign in to My Verizon and choose Chat with us
  2. Type Cancel and follow the prompts to disconnect a line, or ask for a live agent
  3. Or call Customer Service at 800-922-0204 with the account owner name, number and account PIN
  4. Pay off any remaining device payment balance for the line
  5. Note the line disconnects on the last day of the current billing period

After you cancel Verizon Wireless

The line disconnects at the end of the current billing cycle rather than on the day you ask, and the final bill is for the full month. There is no proration on the way out, so cancelling early in a cycle does not reduce what you pay for it.

Any remaining device payment balance becomes due on that final bill rather than continuing month by month. A phone halfway through a payment agreement can turn a routine final bill into several hundred pounds or dollars at once, and promotional bill credits tied to that device stop as well, which is the part people do not price in.

Two smaller charges catch people out. If you took a promotional monthly discount with a minimum term, leaving early voids it and the discounts already received are repaid, capped at a rolling six months. And perk subscriptions that came with the line, the Disney+ or Apple Music kind, simply end with it rather than converting into accounts of your own.

Worth knowing

A postpaid line can be disconnected through My Verizon chat or by calling 800-922-0204; some accounts still require a phone call. Any device installment balance is due when the line is cancelled.

Questions people ask about cancelling Verizon Wireless

How do I cancel without losing my phone number?
Do not cancel first. Start the transfer with your new carrier and give them your Verizon account number and the transfer PIN. The completed port disconnects the Verizon line automatically. Cancelling yourself first releases the number, and getting it back afterwards is unreliable.
Do I have to pay off my phone when I cancel?
Yes. Any outstanding device payment balance is due on the final bill rather than continuing in instalments, and any promotional credits that were being applied against that device stop at the same time.
Will my final bill be prorated?
No. The line runs to the end of the current billing cycle and that month is billed in full, whichever day you cancel on. There is no advantage to cancelling early in a cycle, so time it near the end instead.
Can I cancel just one line and keep the rest?
Yes, a single line can be disconnected while the account continues. Expect the remaining lines to be repriced, because multi line discounts are tiered and dropping below a tier raises the per line cost for everyone left on the account.
