How to cancel Xbox Game Pass Ultimate

This one cancels from your account page in a couple of minutes, with nobody to talk to.

The catch

Microsoft offers two things that look identical on the way out and are not. Turning off recurring billing leaves the subscription running to the end of the paid period and simply stops the renewal. Cancelling ends it now and may refund the unused part. The second sounds better and usually is not: you lose the days you already paid for in exchange for a partial refund. If you just want out at the end of the month, turn off recurring billing and leave it alone.

Cancel Xbox Game Pass Ultimate step by step

  1. Sign in to account.microsoft.com/services with the Microsoft account used to buy Game Pass
  2. Find your Xbox Game Pass subscription under Services & subscriptions
  3. Select Manage next to it
  4. Choose Cancel subscription or turn off recurring billing
  5. Confirm the cancellation

After you cancel Xbox Game Pass Ultimate

Every Game Pass game stops launching when the subscription ends. They stay installed and stay in your library looking available, which is why people assume something is broken rather than expired. Reinstalling does not help. Only resubscribing, or buying the game outright, brings it back, and members usually get a discount on buying a title they have been playing.

Save files survive, and this is the part worth knowing before you cancel. Progress is kept in the cloud and locally, so buying a game later or resubscribing picks up exactly where you stopped. The saves are not deleted with the subscription.

Two things end quietly alongside the games. Online multiplayer for paid titles goes with Ultimate, since the old Xbox Live Gold benefit is bundled into it, and free to play games keep working without it. EA Play, also bundled into Ultimate, ends at the same time and takes its own library with it. If you are cancelling Ultimate specifically to save money, a lower tier keeps a large part of the catalogue for meaningfully less than cancelling and resubscribing later.

Worth knowing

Cancel is managed through the Microsoft account services page. If Game Pass was purchased inside an iOS app, it may be Apple-billed and must be cancelled via Apple Settings / StoreKit instead.

Questions people ask about cancelling Xbox Game Pass Ultimate

Do I keep my Game Pass games after cancelling?
No. Every Game Pass title stops launching when the subscription ends, even though it stays installed and still appears in your library. Only resubscribing or buying the game restores it, and members often get a discount on buying one outright.
Do I lose my save files?
No. Progress is kept in the cloud and on the console, so buying the game later or resubscribing resumes exactly where you left off. This is the one thing cancelling does not take from you.
Should I cancel or just turn off recurring billing?
Turn off recurring billing if you want the days you have already paid for. It stops the renewal and leaves the subscription running to the end of the period. A full cancellation ends access immediately in exchange for a possible partial refund.
Can I still play online after cancelling Ultimate?
Only free to play games. Ultimate includes the old Xbox Live Gold benefit, so paid game multiplayer goes with it. EA Play is bundled in too and ends at the same time, taking its library along. A lower tier keeps more of this than cancelling does.
