How to cancel HBO Max

This one cancels from your account page in a couple of minutes, with nobody to talk to.

The catch

This service has changed its name twice, from HBO Max to Max and back to HBO Max, and the leftovers are still causing trouble. Old max.com links redirect to hbomax.com, older HBO Now and HBO Go accounts were migrated, and any of those can leave you signed into an account that is not the one being billed. Then the usual question: HBO Max is resold through Apple, Google, Roku, Amazon, Hulu, and cable and mobile providers, and each of those cancels only through its own account.

After you cancel HBO Max

Your subscription runs to the end of the current billing period and the cancellation page states the expiration date explicitly, which is worth reading rather than assuming, because HBO Max has more annual subscribers than most and an annual plan cancelled in month three still runs to month twelve.

There is no refund for the unused part of a period. Access, profiles and your continue watching list all remain until the expiration date passes.

Downloads stop playing at expiry. If you cancelled through a cable or mobile provider, expect a delay of a billing cycle before the charge actually disappears from that provider's bill, since their cycle and the HBO Max one are rarely aligned.

The service rebranded from Max back to HBO Max; the original help.max.com and max.com URLs 301-redirect to the canonical hbomax.com domain. Cancellation steps vary by billing provider. If the subscription was purchased inside an iOS app, it is Apple-billed and must be cancelled via Apple Settings / StoreKit manage subscriptions instead.
