How to cancel Netflix

This one cancels from your account page in a couple of minutes, with nobody to talk to.

The catch

Netflix itself is four clicks, so the trap is not the flow, it is whether the flow is yours to use. Netflix will only cancel what Netflix bills. Sign up inside an iPhone app and Apple bills you. Take the Netflix that came with a phone contract, a broadband package or a T-Mobile plan and that company bills you. In every one of those cases the Netflix account page shows no cancel button at all, and people read that as a bug rather than as a signpost. Check who charges you before you go looking.

After you cancel Netflix

Nothing stops on the day you cancel. Netflix runs to the end of the period you already paid for, and the account page shows you the exact date it ends. There is no refund for the unused part of the month, so cancelling on day two of a billing cycle costs the same as cancelling on day twenty eight. If you are not in a hurry, cancel a day or two before the renewal and take the rest of the month you paid for.

Your profiles, viewing history, My List and ratings are not deleted with the subscription. Netflix keeps them for ten months, so restarting inside that window puts everything back exactly as it was rather than handing you a blank account. After ten months it is gone and a new subscription starts from nothing.

Downloads are the part people are surprised by. Titles saved for offline viewing stop playing when the subscription lapses, not when the device next connects to the internet, so a download saved for a flight is no use if the billing period ends before you take off.

If Netflix was purchased inside an iOS app it may be Apple-billed and must be cancelled via Apple Settings / StoreKit manage subscriptions instead. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle.

Questions people ask about cancelling Netflix

Can I get a refund if I cancel Netflix mid month?
No. Netflix does not refund the unused part of a billing period in most regions. You keep access until the period ends, which is the closest thing to a refund on offer, so time the cancellation for just before a renewal rather than just after one.
Why is there no cancel button on my Netflix account page?
Because Netflix is not the company charging you. That happens when the subscription was bought inside an iPhone or iPad app, or came bundled with a phone, broadband or TV package. The account page will name the biller. Cancel with them and the Netflix side ends on its own.
Do I lose my profiles and watch history?
Not immediately. Netflix holds your profiles, viewing history and My List for ten months after the subscription ends, so coming back inside that window restores everything. Past ten months the account is wiped and a restart begins with an empty profile.
Is switching to the plan with ads cheaper than cancelling?
It is cheaper than what you pay now and more than nothing, which makes it the right answer for anyone who still watches. The catalogue is essentially the same with ad breaks added. If you have not opened the app in two months, cancel instead.
