How to cancel YouTube TV

This one cancels from your account page in a couple of minutes, with nobody to talk to.

The catch

Two different things wear the word cancel here. YouTube TV offers a pause of up to six months, and it sits close enough to the cancel control that people take it by mistake, then find the charges resume on their own months later. The other trap is the Google account. Anyone signed into more than one will eventually cancel while looking at the account that was never being billed, and the membership page will cheerfully show no membership to cancel, which reads like success.

Cancel YouTube TV step by step

  1. Sign in to YouTube TV in a web browser
  2. Select your profile photo, then go to Settings
  3. Open Membership and click Manage
  4. Click Cancel membership
  5. Confirm to cancel

After you cancel YouTube TV

The membership runs to the end of the current payment period and the cancellation screen prints that date. Nothing is refunded for the days you do not use, so cancelling on day two of a cycle costs exactly as much as cancelling on day twenty nine.

Recorded programmes in your library expire twenty one days after the membership ends, which is what makes a short break different from a clean exit. Come back inside those three weeks and the library is still there. Come back after and the recordings are gone, though your library preferences are kept, so a later return rebuilds the shape of it but none of the contents.

Add on networks and premium channels bought through YouTube TV end when the base membership does, because they hang off it rather than standing alone. If the subscription was started inside the iOS app, none of the above applies until it is cancelled in the Apple account, because Google is not the one charging you.

Worth knowing

If YouTube TV was subscribed to through the iOS app, it may be Apple-billed and must be cancelled via Apple Settings / StoreKit manage subscriptions instead. Access remains until the end of the current payment period after cancelling.

Questions people ask about cancelling YouTube TV

Is pausing the same as cancelling YouTube TV?
No, and this is the most common mistake on this service. A pause suspends the membership for a set number of months and then restarts it automatically, with no further action from you. If your goal is to stop paying permanently, cancel. If you want the summer off, pause is the better tool.
Do I lose my recordings if I cancel?
Not immediately. Recordings expire twenty one days after the membership ends, and return intact if you resubscribe inside that window. Past three weeks they are gone and cannot be restored, so treat a cancellation as permanent for anything you actually wanted to keep. Restarting later may also cost more, since promotional pricing does not usually come back with you.
I cancelled but I am still being charged. Why?
Two causes, and they are both about where the charge really comes from. Either you cancelled while signed into a different Google account from the one holding the membership, or the subscription was started in the iOS app and Apple is billing you. Check which account the receipt names, and cancel there.
Can I keep watching until the end of the month I paid for?
Yes. Access continues to the end of the current payment period rather than stopping the moment you confirm. The end date is shown on the cancellation screen, and the membership simply does not renew after it.
